Did you ever wonder where the denim jacket came from. I did , I've seen them come in and out of fashion in various shapes and styles over the decades so I decided to find out just where they did start from.
The first I can remember is a Denim clad James Dean in the 50's but no it goes back way before then. The first recorded jean jacket was created in the United States in about 1880 by Levi Strauss, approximately ten years after he had invented jeans as a new type of work apparel intended for use by cowboys, miners and railroad workers.
Along with this, denim became an essential for the American Cowboys and Gold Rush Miners in the 19th Century. Since then the denim jacket has been associated with James Dean and in particular the teenage rebellion of the 1950’s
The Movies and its associated A Grade Actors seem to have lifted the Denim Jacket to new heights in the 50's as well as James Dean
The "Canadian tuxedo" reportedly originated in 1951 after Bing Crosby * was refused entry to a hotel in Canada due to wearing a denim top and denim bottoms. After learning of the incident, Levi Strauss & Co. designed a Tuxedo made entirely of denim as a publicity stunt. Though long considered a fashion faux pas outside of work apparel, the Canadian tuxedo achieved a "pop cultural peak" in 2001 when Britney Spears * and Justin Timberlake * wore the combination to that year's American Music Awards *
